Keys snap because they are worn, cold, or being forced against a stiff lock. The break itself is rarely the hard part — the damage comes from the time someone spends afterwards with pliers, superglue or a screwdriver, pushing the fragment deeper and scoring the wafers. Left alone, most extractions are quick and the lock survives intact.

Why Indianapolis calls us for broken key extraction

Purpose-made extractors

Spiral and hook extractors grab the blade and draw it straight out along the keyway, without gouging the pins.

The lock usually survives

In the large majority of calls the original cylinder keeps working normally once the fragment is out.

A working key before we leave

The broken key is one you needed. We cut a replacement on site, often decoding the lock directly.

Any lock type

House deadbolts, car doors, ignitions, padlocks, mailboxes, cabinets, gates and storefront cylinders.

How it works

  1. 1Stop touching it, and call with the lock type and where the break happened.
  2. 2Extraction plus a replacement key handled in the same visit.
  3. 3The technician extracts the fragment and inspects the cylinder for damage.
  4. 4A fresh key is cut and tested, and any worn lock is flagged before it repeats.

Where keys break most often

The pattern is consistent, and it is nearly always a worn key plus a stiff lock.

  • Ignition cylinders on high-mileage vehicles
  • Exterior deadbolts on cold mornings
  • Padlocks on sheds, gates and trailers
  • Storefront and mortise cylinders
  • Mailbox and cabinet locks
  • Car doors and trunks where the key is rarely used

Why a fresh copy is not enough

If a key snapped, the blade was already worn thin — and any copy cut from a worn key inherits the same weak profile. We cut the replacement to the lock's actual code where possible rather than duplicating the broken original, which is why our replacement usually turns more smoothly than the key you lost.

What customers say

5.0 average from 250+ reviews across the Indianapolis metro.

Locked my keys in the car outside work downtown. Got a straight answer on the phone and the tech had the door open without a scratch.

Marcus T.Indianapolis, IN

Lost the only key to our Camry. They cut and programmed two new keys right in the driveway for a lot less than the dealer quoted, and explained exactly what they were doing.

Danielle R.Carmel, IN

Bought a house and wanted everything keyed alike before we moved in. Six locks done in one visit, one key, clean work.

Broken Key Extraction FAQ

Can I get the piece out myself?

We would strongly advise against it. Pliers, glue and screwdrivers push the fragment deeper and damage the wafers, turning a modest extraction into a cylinder replacement.

Will the lock still work afterwards?

Almost always. Damage happens from forcing, not from the break itself. If a cylinder is compromised we will show you why and quote the replacement.

Do you cut a new key at the same time?

Yes, a replacement key is cut in the same visit. Extraction alone leaves you no better off.

My key broke in the ignition. Is that different?

It is more delicate, because the fragment sits against the immobilizer ring and the steering lock. Do not turn anything and we will handle it — we can also cut and program a new transponder key on the spot.

Do you come out at night?

Yes, 24 hours a day across the metro. Dispatch gives you an honest arrival window based on where the nearest technician is.
