Passlock and the built-in security delay

Many GM vehicles equipped with Passlock use a resistor pellet inside the ignition lock rather than a chip in the key itself, so a new key can sometimes be cut and used without a traditional programming step. Passlock relearn procedures involve a mandatory security delay with the ignition in a specific position before the system accepts the new key.

For vehicles using chipped transponder keys or smart proximity fobs, all-keys-lost service requires connecting through the OBD-II port to program a new key or fob directly into the body control module. GM's built-in security delay applies here as well, so this process is planned for accordingly rather than rushed.
