What a transponder chip actually does

A small chip embedded in the plastic head of the key sends a unique encrypted signal to a reader coil around the ignition cylinder. If that code doesn't match what's stored in the immobilizer computer, the engine control unit blocks fuel injection or spark, even though the key still turns the mechanical lock fine.

Common reasons programming is needed

This comes up after buying an aftermarket key cut only for the mechanical blade, after a chip is physically damaged, or after a battery replacement resets the sync on some vehicles. It's also needed any time all original keys were lost and a new one has to be introduced to the car's system.
