All-keys-lost programming

When every Toyota key is lost, programming a new one almost always requires connecting through the OBD-II port to read the immobilizer data and write a new key or fob to the system. H-chip vehicles use rolling security codes that add wait time between programming attempts, so an all-keys-lost job takes longer depending on the model year and security system generation.

Ignition and lock cylinder wear

High-mileage Camry, Corolla and Avalon ignition cylinders can develop a sticky or hard-to-turn feel well before the key itself is worn out, and a worn tumbler can shorten the life of any new key cut for it. On these models it is worth checking the cylinder condition at the same time a new key is cut so the new key is not blamed for an ignition problem.

Smart key and proximity fob quirks

Toyota proximity systems generally allow up to eight fobs to be registered at once, and adding one fob can erase previously programmed fobs on some model years unless every existing fob is present during programming. Bringing all working fobs and key cards to the appointment avoids having to reprogram spares later.
