Why a fresh-from-the-box fob doesn't work

Aftermarket and even genuine OEM fobs bought separately are not linked to any particular car when they ship. Each vehicle's body control module stores a list of authorized fob IDs, and a fob only works after it is added to that list using a programmer connected through the OBD port or, on older models, a specific key-and-door sequence.

Two programming methods used

Some vehicles allow programming through an in-cabin procedure using the existing key and door lock cycling, with no special tool required. Most vehicles from the last 10-15 years need a professional OBD programmer that communicates directly with the immobilizer and body control modules to add or remove fob IDs.

Adding fobs after a lost key

If a fob was lost, stolen, or left with a previous owner, it's worth erasing it from the car's system while programming a replacement. That keeps the lost fob from being able to unlock or start the vehicle later, which most programmers can do in the same session.
