Honda vehicles built since the mid-2000s primarily use the HON66 blade profile, with transponder chips ranging from the older ID48 to newer rolling-code systems used in proximity key vehicles. Honda's immobilizer design generally requires two working keys already present in the vehicle to add a third through standard procedures, which is why all-keys-lost jobs need a different approach involving the vehicle's control module. Many Civic and Accord models also use an interchangeable key blade that pops out of the fob housing, so a cracked shell is a common repair even when the internal electronics are fine.

Two-key requirement and all-keys-lost service

Honda's standard key-add procedure normally requires two functioning keys already registered to the car, which makes an all-keys-lost Honda one of the more involved automotive jobs. It typically requires connecting to the vehicle's body control module directly to reset the immobilizer and register new keys, and can take longer than a standard duplicate on many model years.

Fob shell wear and blade replacement

Honda proximity fobs and flip keys often develop cracked shells or a loose folding blade well before the internal chip or remote functions fail. In many cases the working electronics can be moved into a new shell and a fresh HON66 blade cut, avoiding the cost of full reprogramming.

  • Shell and blade replacement without reprogramming when the chip is intact
  • Battery replacement often resolves intermittent remote range issues

Ignition switch and ignition lock behavior

Some Honda Accord and Civic model years are known for ignition switch electrical issues that can mimic a bad key, causing intermittent no-start conditions. Confirming whether the fault is in the key, the transponder ring around the ignition, or the switch itself is part of an accurate Honda diagnosis before cutting a new key.

Honda models we service

Model-specific key and fob notes, with realistic on-site turnaround times.

Honda Civic Key Replacement

HON66 transponder key or smart proximity fob (2016+)

2016+ Civic uses a smart fob system; earlier generations use a cut HON66 key with an ID48 transponder chip.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda Accord Key Replacement

Smart proximity fob with push-to-start (2013+)

Accord all-keys-lost service generally requires body control module access since Honda requires an existing key for standard key-add procedures.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda CR-V Key Replacement

HON66 flip key or smart proximity fob (2015+)

CR-V flip key blades are a common failure point separate from the electronics; blade-only replacement is often possible.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda Pilot Key Replacement

Smart proximity fob with push-to-start

Pilot proximity systems support multiple registered fobs; replacing one does not require the others to be present in most cases.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda Odyssey Key Replacement

Smart proximity fob with push-to-start

Odyssey fobs also operate power sliding doors and the rear liftgate, so a working spare is especially useful for this model.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda HR-V Key Replacement

HON66 transponder key or smart fob (2019+)

HR-V shares much of its key architecture with the Civic of the same generation.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda Fit Key Replacement

HON66 transponder blade key

Fit models commonly use a standard cut-and-program HON66 key rather than a proximity fob.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda Ridgeline Key Replacement

Proximity smart key with remote tailgate

The Ridgeline fob controls the dual-action tailgate as well as ignition, so both functions get verified after programming. All-keys-lost requires immobilizer access through the OBD port, which we do in the driveway.

Cut and programmed on site

Honda Passport Key Replacement

Push-to-start proximity key

Passport keys share the Pilot platform but use a later immobilizer revision, so the correct FCC ID matters. We stock both variants and confirm by VIN before cutting the emergency blade.

Honda Key & Fob FAQ

Why does a Honda all-keys-lost job take longer than other brands?

Honda's system typically requires an already-registered key to add a new one, so when all keys are lost, the immobilizer has to be accessed and reset directly through the body control module. This process takes more time than a standard duplicate key.

Can a broken Honda key fob be fixed without reprogramming?

Often yes. If the internal transponder chip and remote board are undamaged, they can usually be transferred into a new shell with a freshly cut HON66 blade, which avoids the need to reprogram the fob to the vehicle.

What blade profile does my Honda use?

Most Honda vehicles from 2006 onward use the HON66 blade profile. Some earlier models used HON58 or HON64 blades, so the door lock is checked before a key is cut.

My Honda fob works up close but not from far away, why?

This is usually a weak or dying fob battery rather than a programming issue. A battery swap resolves most short-range remote complaints, and testing the fob confirms whether reprogramming is actually needed.

Do all Honda models use a proximity smart key?

No. Many Civic, Fit and older Accord and CR-V models use a traditional cut transponder key rather than a push-to-start proximity fob. The correct key type depends on the model year and trim.
