Ford's PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) has gone through several generations since the late 1990s, and the correct programming method depends heavily on which PATS generation a given vehicle uses. Many Ford trucks and SUVs from the 2000s and early 2010s support a self-programming procedure using two existing keys, while newer PATS generations and all smart proximity key vehicles require dedicated programming tools connected through the OBD-II port. Ford's HU101 high-security laser-cut blade is standard on most vehicles built since roughly 2011, replacing the older H75/H84 blade profiles used on earlier trucks and cars.

PATS generation matters for programming method

Ford's PATS system has multiple generations, and the correct programming procedure changes depending on which one a vehicle has. Some older PATS 1-3 vehicles can self-program a new key using two working keys already in hand, while PATS 4 and later, along with all smart key systems, require dedicated programming equipment connected to the vehicle's diagnostic port.

  • PATS 1-3: self-programmable with two existing working keys on many models
  • PATS 4+ and smart key systems: OBD-II tool-based programming required

All-keys-lost on Ford trucks and SUVs

When no working Ford key is available, the PATS module has to be accessed directly to erase old key data and register a new key or fob, since the self-programming shortcut needs an existing key to initiate. This applies to F-150, Explorer, Escape and most other current Ford models with all keys lost.

HU101 blade and laser cutting

Since the HU101 blade was introduced, Ford keys require laser/sidewinder cutting rather than a standard edge cut, and the blade itself is a higher-security, harder-to-duplicate design. This blade is standard across nearly all Ford, Lincoln passenger vehicles and trucks from 2011 onward.

Model-specific key and fob notes, with realistic on-site turnaround times.

Ford F-150 Key Replacement

HU101 transponder key or smart proximity fob (2015+)

Pre-2011 F-150 trucks can often self-program a spare key using two existing working keys, cutting down on programming time.

Ford Escape Key Replacement

Smart proximity fob with push-to-start (2013+)

Escape smart key programming requires OBD-II based tools; self-programming shortcuts do not apply to smart key trims.

Cut and programmed on site

Ford Explorer Key Replacement

Smart proximity fob with push-to-start

Explorer all-keys-lost jobs require full PATS module access since no working key is available to initiate self-programming.

Ford Focus Key Replacement

HU101 transponder key or flip key

Focus models built after 2011 use the HU101 laser-cut blade; earlier models use the H84 profile.

Ford Fusion Key Replacement

HU101 transponder key or smart proximity fob

Fusion trims vary between a cut transponder key and a full smart proximity system depending on model year.

Ford Edge Key Replacement

Smart proximity fob with push-to-start

Edge fob programming follows the OBD-II tool-based PATS procedure standard on Ford's larger SUVs.

Ford Ranger Key Replacement

HU101 transponder key or flip key (2019+)

The reintroduced Ranger uses the same HU101 platform-wide blade shared with F-150 and Escape.

Ford Mustang Key Replacement

80-bit transponder or proximity fob depending on year

Coupes from the S550 generation onward take proximity fobs; earlier cars use a bladed 80-bit key. Mustangs frequently need two keys present for older-style onboard programming, which is why we bring a spare blank on every call.

Ford Expedition Key Replacement

Proximity smart fob with remote start

Expedition fobs carry remote start and power liftgate functions that must be re-linked after programming. We also check the keypad code on the door pillar so the truck can still be opened without a key.

Ford Key & Fob FAQ

Can a Ford truck key be programmed without special tools?

Some older Ford trucks with PATS generations 1 through 3 can self-program a new key using two existing working keys and a specific ignition sequence. Newer PATS generations and all smart key vehicles need dedicated programming equipment.

What is the HU101 key blade?

HU101 is Ford's high-security laser-cut key blade profile used on nearly all Ford and Lincoln vehicles from 2011 onward. It requires sidewinder-style laser cutting rather than a traditional edge-cut key.

How does all-keys-lost work on a Ford with no working key?

Without an existing working key, the self-programming shortcut is not available, so the PATS module is accessed directly to clear old key data and register the new key or fob, similar to most other modern vehicles.

Does my Ford use a proximity fob or a cut key?

It depends on trim and model year. Many Escape, Explorer, Edge and higher F-150 trims use push-to-start proximity fobs, while base trims and older models use a cut transponder key with a separate remote.

Why is my Ford key harder to duplicate than older cars?

Since around 2011, Ford switched to the HU101 laser-cut blade and updated PATS security, both of which require specific cutting equipment and programming tools rather than a basic hardware-store key copy.
