Measuring and prepping the door

Every install starts with checking the door's thickness, the backset distance from the edge to the center of the bore hole, and whether the frame needs a new strike plate mortise. Doors without any existing hardware need holes bored to spec before a lock can be fitted at all.

Matching hardware to the door and use case

An exterior entry door generally calls for a deadbolt paired with a keyed knob or lever, while interior doors might just need a privacy lock for a bathroom or bedroom. Matching the grade of hardware to how the door is actually used avoids paying for security that isn't needed indoors, or under-securing an exterior entry.

Frame strength matters as much as the lock

A high-quality deadbolt installed into a thin strike plate with short screws is still vulnerable to a hard kick. Reinforcing the strike plate with longer screws into the frame's structural wood is often included so the lock's strength actually holds up under force.
